Properties of matter vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Matter | anything that takes up space and has mass |
| Volume | the amount of space matter occupies (takes up) |
| Physical Properties | characteristics that help us identify or classify matter |
| density | the amount of matter in a given volume (space) |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas |
| melting point | the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid into a liquid |
| electrical conductivity | how well a substance allows electricity to flow through it |
| solubility | the ability to dissolve in another substance |
| Solid | keeps its shape and volume |
| liquid | takes on the shape of its container, keeps the same volume, can flow |
| gas | takes on the shape and volume of its container |
| melting | the change from a solid state to a liquid state |
| freezing | the change from a liquid state to a solid state |
| vaporization | the change from a liquid state to a gaseous state, aka boiling or evaporation |
| condensation | the change from a gaseous state to a liquid state |
| mixture | a combination of two or more substances that maintain their physical properties |
| solution | a special kind of mixture where two or more ingredients combine completely and form a new substance. Physical properties change. |
| solute | a substance in a solution that dissolves into the solvent |
| solvent | the subtance into which a solute is dissolved; usually a liquid |
