Properties of Matter

Properties of matter vocabulary

TermDefinition
Matter anything that takes up space and has mass
Volume the amount of space matter occupies (takes up)
Physical Properties characteristics that help us identify or classify matter
density the amount of matter in a given volume (space)
boiling point the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas
melting point the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid into a liquid
electrical conductivity how well a substance allows electricity to flow through it
solubility the ability to dissolve in another substance
Solid keeps its shape and volume
liquid takes on the shape of its container, keeps the same volume, can flow
gas takes on the shape and volume of its container
melting the change from a solid state to a liquid state
freezing the change from a liquid state to a solid state
vaporization the change from a liquid state to a gaseous state, aka boiling or evaporation
condensation the change from a gaseous state to a liquid state
mixture a combination of two or more substances that maintain their physical properties
solution a special kind of mixture where two or more ingredients combine completely and form a new substance. Physical properties change.
solute a substance in a solution that dissolves into the solvent
solvent the subtance into which a solute is dissolved; usually a liquid
