| Figurative Language | language that communicates ideas beyond the literal meaning of the words |
| Allusion | reference to a well known person, thing, or event |
| main character | person in the story who learns a lesson |
| character | individuals who take part in the action of the story |
| conflict | struggle between two opposing forces |
| fiction | story that comes from the writer's imagination |
| theme | important idea or message that the author want to share with the reader |
| plot | sequence of related events that take place in a story |
| flashback | prior even that happened before the beginning of the story |
| setting | time and place in which the story takes place |
| imagery | words and phrases that appeal to the five senses |
| symbolism | concrete object used to represent an abstract idea |
| metaphor | comparison of two unlike things |
| personification | giving something non-human, human like qualities |
| foreshadowing | a writer's use of hint for what is about to come later |
| simile | comparison of two like things using like or as |
