Literary Terms

Figurative Language language that communicates ideas beyond the literal meaning of the words
Allusion reference to a well known person, thing, or event
main character person in the story who learns a lesson
character individuals who take part in the action of the story
conflict struggle between two opposing forces
fiction story that comes from the writer's imagination
theme important idea or message that the author want to share with the reader
plot sequence of related events that take place in a story
flashback prior even that happened before the beginning of the story
setting time and place in which the story takes place
imagery words and phrases that appeal to the five senses
symbolism concrete object used to represent an abstract idea
metaphor comparison of two unlike things
personification giving something non-human, human like qualities
foreshadowing a writer's use of hint for what is about to come later
simile comparison of two like things using like or as
