Plot

Understanding plot development

TermDefinition
Plot The way the events are ordered to create a story; all of the action that takes place during the story.
Exposition The background information on the characters and setting explained at the beginning of the story
Rising Action The main events or actions of the characters; includes only those events central to moving the story toward the climax
Climax When the hero confronts the problem and it is resolved; often the most exciting part of the story; also called the turning point in which the plot changes for better or worse for the hero
Falling Action Additional details given about the characters and events after the climax; these details “tie up loose ends”
Resolution Where you learn what happens to the characters after the conflict is resolved and the final outcome of the story
