Understanding plot development
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Plot | The way the events are ordered to create a story; all of the action that takes place during the story. |
| Exposition | The background information on the characters and setting explained at the beginning of the story |
| Rising Action | The main events or actions of the characters; includes only those events central to moving the story toward the climax |
| Climax | When the hero confronts the problem and it is resolved; often the most exciting part of the story; also called the turning point in which the plot changes for better or worse for the hero |
| Falling Action | Additional details given about the characters and events after the climax; these details “tie up loose ends” |
| Resolution | Where you learn what happens to the characters after the conflict is resolved and the final outcome of the story |
