Story Elements

Terms you need to know

TermDefinition
Setting When and Where the story takes place
Character People, animals, or other creatures in the story
Protagonist The main good character in a story; the character you are hoping will succeed, defeat the villain, and be happy
Antagonist The main bad character(s) in a story; the character(s) who tries to prevent the hero from succeeding or being happy
Supporting Character All other characters who are not the protagonist or antagonist.
Conflict The problem in the story
Internal Conflict A struggle between the character and self.
External Conflict A struggle between the character and an outside force such as nature, society or another character.
Plot The order in which events occur in the story.
