What is the technique an author uses to hint at events that will occur later in the story? FORESHADOWING
What is the contrast between what is expected and what appears to actually be true? IRONY
This is when the reader knows something that the character does not know. DRAMATIC IRONY
This occurs when the writer says one thing and means another or when someone knowingly exaggerates. "The best substitute for experience is being 13." VERBAL IRONY
This is the contrast between what the reader or character expects and what actually happens. "The fireman's house burns down." SITUATIONAL IRONAY

What are reoccurring subjects, themes, objects called? This is when the author uses images of light and dark in a story. MOTIF
What is the main idea of a literary work? THEME
What is the technique called when an author creates a character who contrasts another character? FOIL
This is the character that remains the same throughout the story. STATIC
These characters are highly involved in the plot and normally are three dimensional. MAJOR CHARACTERS
This characters support an idea or subplot and normally are flat or static. MINOR CHARACTERS
What is the dictionary definition of a word? DENOTATION
What is the emotional meaning of a word? CONNOTATION
