Energy The ability to do work.
Mechanical Energy Energy produced by a machine or moving part.
Light Energy Electromagnetic energy that can be sensed by the eye.
Sound Energy Mechanical energy that travels as waves through the air or water and vibrates the ear drum upon contact.
Electrical Energy Energy resulting from the flow of charged particles.
Thermal/Heat Energy Energy that can be measured by a thermometer.
Kinetic Energy The energy of motion
Visible Spectrum The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye.
Potential energy Stored energy.
Chemical energy The energy that results during a chemical reaction
Joule The standard measure of work or energy
Convex Lens A convex lens is thicker at the center than at the edges.Rays of light that pass through the lens are brought closer together (they converge)
Concave Lens Concave lenses are thinner at the middle. Rays of light that pass through the lens are spread out (they diverge).
Reflect When light bounces off objects.
Refract When light seems to bend as it passes through substances.
Prism A glass or other transparent object with refracting surfaces that separates white light into a spectrum of colors.
Rainbow An arch in the sky made up of different colors that forms when the sun's rays are refracted by rain drops,
Spectrum The band of colors formed by a beam of light, like a rainbow.
Opaque A material that does not allow light to pass through.
Translucent A material that permits light to pass through but diffusing it so that objects on the opposite side are not clearly visible:
Transparent A material that transmits rays of light through its substance so that bodies situated beyond or behind can be distinctly seen.
Absorb The process by which one substance, such as a solid or liquid, takes up another substance.
Transmit To send out or pass from one object to another or from one place to another.
