Matter Classification
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Chemical Formula | a combination of symbols that represents the elements in a compound and their proportions; Ex. NaCl = one atom of sodium for every one atom of chlorine |
Pure Substance | a sample of matter with both definite and constant composition with distinct chemical properties; recipe does not change |
Element | a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by either physical or chemical means; the basic material that makes up all matter |
Compound | a pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically combined in a set ratio (the recipe is always the same) like the NaCl above |
Molecule | a neutral particle made of two or more atoms joined in a chemical bond |
Mixture | two or more substances that are mixed together but are not chemically combined; the recipe is changeable |
Solution | a well-blended mixture, containing a solvent and at least one solute, which has the same properties throughout |
Physical Property | a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance (Ex: frozen water is still water) |
Chemical Property | a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into a different substance (iron has the ability to rust) |
Physical Change | a change in a substance that does not change its identity (Ex: sand on a beach made into a castle) |
Chemical Change | a change in which one or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances; also known as a chemical reaction (hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water) |
Heterogeneous Mixture | a mixture in which pure substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture; you can see the different parts (Ex: salad, soil) |
Homogeneous mixture | a mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture so that you cannot see the various parts (Ex: sweet tea) |
