distinguish between atoms and molecules
| Term | Definition |

| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element |
| Element | A substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substance by chemical means |
| Nucleus | In physical science an atoms central region which is made up of protons and neutrons |
| Proton | A substance particle that has a postive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Neutron | A substance particle that has no change and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Electron | A subatomic particle that has a negative change } |
| Atomic Number | The number of protains in the nucleus of an atom the atomic number is the same for all atoms of an element |
| Neutral | Having no overall charge |
| Atomic Mass | The mass of an atom expressed in atomic mass units |
| Chemical Symbol | A one-two-letter code that represents and element |
