TermDefinition
atom the smallest unit of element that maintains the properties of that element.
element a substance that can not be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical mean.
nucleus in physical science,an atom central region ,witch is made up of protons and neutrons.
proton a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom .
neutron a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of a atom.
electron a subatomic particle that has a negative charge
atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of a atom
chemical symbol a one or a two letter code that represents an element
neutral having no over charge
atomic mass the mass of a atom expressed in atomic mass units
pure substance a sample of matter either a single element or a single compound that has definite chemical and physical change
compound a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined be chemical bond
molecule the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the chemical and physical properties of that substance
chemical formula a combination of chemicals symbols and numbers to represents a substance
subscript a small number written to the right and slightly below a chemical symbol to tell the number of atoms of that element in the substance.
mixture the combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
state of matter the physical forms of matter ,witch includes solids, liquids, and gas
solid the state of matter in witch the volume and shape of a substance are fixed
gas a form of matter that does not have definite volume or shape
melting point temperature in witch a solid to changes to a liquid
vaporization process in witch a liquid changes in a gas
boiling point the temperature at witch a liquid vaporized and changes into a gas
condensation the change from a gas to a liquid
freezing point temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid
sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly into gas
phase change diagram drawing that shows the relationship among
plasma a state of matter that forms when temperature are enough to completely re move electrons from the atoms to which they were bound
physical property a substance that does not involve a chemical such as density, color, and hardness
density the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
chemical property a property of matter that describes a substance ability to participate in chemical reaction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
