Plot Elements Week 2
Various names of plot elements of fictional works
| Term | Definition |

| Protagonist | The "good" character in a novel who makes good choices. |
| Antagonist | The "bad" character in a novel, who may be working against the "good" character. |
| Rising Action | a related series of incidents in a literary plot that build toward the point of greatest interest |
| Falling Action | is defined as the parts of a story after the climax and before the very end. |
| Denouement | he final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved. |
| Exposition | The part of the story, usually near the beginning, in which the characters are introduced, the background is explained, and the setting is described. |
| Climax | a decisive moment that is of maximum intensity or is a major turning point in a plot. |
| Conflict | Any struggle between opposing forces. Usually, the main character struggles against some other force. |
| Theme | The underlying message, or 'big idea' in a piece of literature. In other words, what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem? |
| Author's Purpose | PIE, which stands for persuade, inform and entertain. |
