ELA Literature Terms

Mastering these terms will help you appropriately discuss literature in class

TermDefinition
First Person The narrator is one of the characters in the story. Pronouns such as I, me, my, and mine are used.
Third Person The narrator is NOT a character in the story. Pronouns such as he, his, she, hers, it, its, and they are used.
Imagery Words and phrases that create a VIVID picture or image in the reader’s mind
Simile A figure of speech comparing two things using like or as
Metaphor A figure of speech comparing two things, saying one thing IS another
Inference The act of drawing conclusions from what is assumed to be true based on evidence from the text.
Conflict When two forces are not compatible, creating tension or a problem. Types: Person vs. self, person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. society
Internal Conflict Conflict between a character and his/her conscience (inner voice)
External Conflict Conflict between a character and someone/something else
Theme The message OR lesson of a piece of literature; example: “growing up can be difficult”
