Chapter 12 Vocab

Aseptic Technique The procedures used to eliminate the possibility of a drug becoming contaminated with microbes or particles
Clean Room As it pertains to pharmacy it is a controlled environment with low levels of possible contaminate used to prepare sterile products
Compounded Sterile Products (CSPs) Preparations prepared in a sterile environment using non sterile ingredients or devices that must be sterilized before administration
Gauge The size of the needle opening
Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood Environment for the preparation of sterile products where air originating from the back of the hood move to the front and into the room
Hyperalimentation Parenteral nutrition for persons who are unable to eat solids or drink liquids
Laminar Flow Hood Environment in which to prepare sterile products
Nosocomial infection An infection that is acquired after being admitted to an institution
Parental Medication Medication that bypasses the digestive tract but is intented or a systematic effect
Peripheral Parenteral Injection of medication into the veins located at the peripherals of the body instead of central vein or artery
Precipitate To separate from solution or suspension
Reconstitute To add a diluent to a powder
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Written guidelines and criteria that list specific steps for various competencies
Standard Precautions (Universal Precautions) A set of standards that lower the possibly of contamination and lowers the risk of transmission of infectious diseases
Total Parenteral Nutrition Large-volume intravenous nutrition administered through the central vein for a high concentration of the solution
Vertical Laminar Flow Hood Environment for the preparation of chemotherapeutic and hazardous agents where air originating from the roof of the hood moves downward and is captured in the vent on the floor of the hood
