Aseptic technique The procedures used to eliminate the possibility of a drug becoming contaminated with microbes or particles
Automated Dispensing System (ADS) Computerized cabinets that control inventory on nursing floors, in emergency departments, surgical suites, and other areas
Computerized Physicians order entry (CPOE) computerized order entry
Crash Carts Also known as code carts . A moveable cart containing trays of medications, administration sets, oxygen, and other materials that are used in life threatening situations.
Electronic Medication Administration Record (E-MAR) Medication orders that are transcribed listing drug strength dosage form dose and dosage time nurse records and initials when it was taken
Formulary A list of drugs that have been approved by the pharmacy and therapeutic committee for use I hospitals and becomes the standard stock carried by the pharmacy and other departments
Institutional Pharmacy hospital pharmacy
Investigational Drug A drug that has not been approved by the FDA for marketing but is in clinical trails or a drug the are trying t find another use for
NKA no known allergies
NKDA no known drug allergies
Non-formulary Medicatons Drugs that are not approved for use in an institution unless specific conditions are filed and approved by the institutional protocols
PAR Periodic automated replenishment
Prn Latin term meaning as needed
Protocol A set of standards and guidelines within which a facility operates
Pyxis An automated dispensing machine often used in hospitals
Satellite Pharmacy A smaller pharmacy in a hospital located away rom the central pharmacy
Stat Order A medication order that needs to be filled as soon as possible usually between 5 and 15 minutes
SureMed An automated dispensing machine often used in hospitals
The Joint Commission (TJC) A nonprofit organization that accredits hospitals and other health care organizations accreditation is required to be able to accept Medicare or Medicaid payment
Unit Dose Individual pre-packaged medications used for a single dose
United States Pharmacopeia <797> (USP <797>) Guidelines enforceable for the safe preparation of sterile products
