| Term | Definition |

| Atom | the basic particle from which all elements are made |
| Nucleus | the central core of the atom made up of protons and neutrons |
| Neutron | a small particle in the nucleus of the atom; it has no electrical charge |
| Proton | a positively charged particle that is part of an atom's nucleus; the number of protons is known as the atomic number |
| Electron | a negatively charged particle found outside the nucleus of an atom |
| Mass Number | the sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
| Metal | a class of elements characterized by physical properties that include shininess, malleability, ductility, and conductivity; these are found on the left-hand side of the zigzag line on the periodic table |
| Nonmetal | an element that lacks most of the properties of a metal; these are found on the right-hand side of the zigzag line on the periodic table |
| Metalloid | an element that has some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals; these are found hugging the zigzag line on the periodic table |
| Atomic Mass | the average mass of all the isotopes of an element; this is the decimal value found on an element card |
| Periodic Table | a chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties; arranged by atomic numbers of the elements |
| Atomic Number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; this number identifies an element and its location on the periodic table |
| Period | a horizontal row of elements in the periodic table |
| Group | elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table; also known as a 'family' |
| Chemical Symbol | a one- or two-letter representation of an element on the periodic table |
