Airway Care/ Chest Percussion

Chest Percussion Purpose: Mechanically dislodge secretions
Chest Percussion Indications: * in combination with postural drainage * secretions difficult to dislodge
Chest Percussion Hazards and Contraindications: * soft tissue trauma * fractured ribs * hemoptysis/ pulmonary hemorrhage * metastatic conditions * pulmonary emboli * TB * Untreated Pneumothorax (Absolute contraindication)
Chest Percussion Technique Cupped hand position thumb next to finger, wrist relax Rhythmic percussion over area to be drained Mechanical percussion or vibrations devices used if pt. doesn't tolerate manual percussion
