| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who must get certified? | Anyone who will perform maintenance, service, or repair that it is reasonably expected to release CFC or HCFC into the atmosphere. |
| What are the types of certifications? | Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal |
| Does the EPA require recertification? | No, but it can change in the future |
| Who's responsibility is it to comply to any regulation changes? | The technician |
| Type II certification is required for who? | Any high or very high pressure refrigerants. |
| What is considered high pressure refrigerants? | Boiling points between -58 degrees and 50 degrees F at atmospheric pressure. |
| What are typical refrigerants used in high pressure refrigerants? | R-12, R-22, R-502, and R134a |
| What is considered very high pressure refrigerants? | Boiling points below -50 degrees F at atmospheric pressure. |
| What are typical refrigerants used in very high pressure refrigerants? | R-13, and R-503 |
| What is a compressor heater used for? | To reduce the amount of refrigerant in the lubricating oil. |
| What is a Low Loss Fitting? | Any device intended to establish connections between hoses, appliances, recovery/recycling machines that is designed to close automatically or manually when connecting or disconnecting to minimize release of refrigerant. |
| What is considered a major repair? | Repair that involves removal of the compressor, condenser, evaporator, or auxiliary heat exchanger oil. |
| What is a moisture-indicating sight glass used for? | To check moisture content of refrigerant. |
| Where do you usually oil foaming? | In the crankcase of the compressor when the refrigerant separates from the oil. |
| What is Self-contained Recovery Equipment? | Recovery or recycling equipment that is capable of removing refrigerant from and appliance without the assistance of components contained in the appliance. |
| What is a System-dependent Recovery Equipment? | A recovery system that requires the assistance of components contained in the appliance. The pressure of the refrigerant in the appliance and capture refrigerant in a non-pressurized container. |
| What does ASHRAE Standard 34 state? | Refrigerants are classified into safety groups based on toxicity and flammability. That there are six classifications. |
| What are the six classifications of the ASHRAE Standard 34? | A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3 |
| What does the A or B signify in the ASHRAE Standard 34? | The toxicity |
| What does the 1,2,or 3 signify in the ASHRAE Standard 34? | The flammability |
| What does ASHARE Standard 15 state? | Group A1 refrigerants, machinery rooms shall be equipped with an equipment room refrigerant monitor and it shall actuate and alarm and start mechanical ventilation. |
| When are Owners required to do repairs? | When there is substantial leaks in equipment with charges of greater than 50lbs. |
| When are industrial process and commercial refrigeration equipment required to do repairs? | If the Annual leak is 35% or greater. |
| When is comfort cooler chillers and any other equipment required to do repairs? | If the annual leak is 15% or greater. |
| What are common leak detection methods? | Visual inspection, halide torch, electronic or ultrasonic leak detector, soap bubble test, and pressure test. |
| Should you ever use compressed air or oxygen to pressurize a system? | No, dry nitrogen is the safest. |
| What are the common sources of leaks? | Tubing connections and fittings, service valves, and shaft seal of an open compressor. |
| What is required for proper and efficient servicing, repair, and recovery? | Knowledge of the function and location of all components of the refrigeration system. |
| What are the important components of a refrigeration system? | Compressor, condenser, receiver, liquid line, metering device, evaporator, accumulator, and suction line. |
| What are the refrigerant conditions? | HPG/HTG, HPL/HTL, LPL/LTL, supercooled liquid, LPG/LTG, and Superheated Gas |
| What is the exception to the evacuation requirements? | If, due to leaks, the required evacuation level is not attainable, or substantially contaminate refrigerant |
| What does ARI 740 mean? | That recovery devices made after November 15, 1993 has to be certified by a third party EPA approved lab. |
| What should you do before recovering refrigerant from an appliance? | Leak check recovery device, and change the recovery device oil and filter |
| What has to be done if you are recovering R134a from an appliance? | You have to use a recovery device, hoses, gauges, and vacuum pump dedicated for R134a only. |
| What is the quickest method of recovery to recover liquid from the high side? | Connect one hose to the liquid line, receiver, or condenser outlet (bottom) if below receiver. |
| What happens when you are recovering in the vapor stage? | Will decrease oil loss. |
| When doing a recovery, what should be recovered first and what is last? | Recover the liquid first. Finish by recovering the vapor. |
| How can you speed up the recovery process? | By cooling the cylinder with ice. |
| Why should you use caution when the recovery device has a refrigerant cooled hermetic compressor? | It could overheat while pulling a deep vacuum. |
| What should you do once the required recovery vacuum level has been reached? | Isolate the system and hold the vacuum. If the pressure doesn't rise, it indicates that all the liquid refrigerant has been evacuated. |
| What should you do after the recovery process? | Check the recovered refrigerant for contamination. Check oil sample to see if the unit had a compressor burnout. |
| When evacuating a large vacuum hose could do what? | Cause trapped moisture to freeze. |
| While evacuating you notice a lot of moisture present, what should you do? | Add nitrogen to increase pressure to counteract moisture. |
| If there is a filter-dryer installed in the system what should happen? | It should remove moisture from the refrigerant. |
| What is DOT reg 49 CFR? | Regulation for transporting explosives and other dangerous articles. |
| What type of storage and recovery containers should you use? | DOT approved |
| Before using a recovery device, what should you do? | Leak check the device, check and change oil if needed, know the refrigeration systems refrigerant, assure the vacuum pump is capable of pulling 500 microns, and check service valve positions. |
| When should you not energize a compressor? | If the system is in a deep vacuum or motor windings may overheat and be damaged. |
| What can non-condensibles cause? | High discharge pressure |
| If you have to use dry nitrogen, what must it go through? | Pressure Regulator |
| What should all refrigeration systems be equipped with? | Functioning pressure relief device. |
| If the pressure relief device is malfunctioning, corroded, or damaged what should you do? | Replace it |
| How do you install pressure relief device? | In Parallel to the system. |
| What should you use to remove ice from a sight glass? | An alcohol spray. |
