| act | a major unit of action in a drama |
| antagonist | the force working against the main character |
| character | a person, animal, or imaginary creature in a literary work |
| character foil | characters in the same work who provide a sharp contrast to each other |
| character trait | adjectives that tell specific qualities about characters |
| climax | the moment of highest tension |
| turning point | the moment of highest tension |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| denouement | loose ends of the play are tied up |
| resolution | loose ends of the play are tied up |
| dialogue | the words the characters speak to each other |
| drama | form of literature performed by actors on a stage |
| dynamic character | a character who changes as a person |
| exposition | beginning of story- introduces the setting, characters, and the basic situation |
| falling action | the events after the climax leading to the resolution |
| flashback | interruption of time to earlier occurrence |
| foreshadowing | when a writer provides hints or clues about something that will happen later |
| internal conflict | a struggle within a character's mind |
| plot | a sequence of related events |
| protagonist | the central/main character in a work |
| rising action | complications arise and the plot builds |
| scapegoat | a person or group who is made to carry the blame for something |
| scene | events that occur in one place at one time in a play are grouped in scenes |
| screenplay | a script written for a movie |
| script | written form of drama |
| setting | time and place of a play |
| stage directions | the instructions for the actors, director, and stage crew |
| static character | a character who stays the same |
| teleplay | a play written for television |
| voice of reason | the calm, rational character who tries to make people think logically |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds in the beginning of words |
| analogy | comparing one thing to another so it is understandable |
| ballad | narrative poem that tells a story and has setting, plot, and characters |
| dialect | when people from a certain place speak a certain way |
| end rhyme | rhyme at the ends of lines |
| epic | long narrative poem about the adventures of a hero |
| extended metaphor | a metaphor that continues through out the poem |
| figurative language | language that should not be taken literally |
| free verse | poetry that does not rhyme |
| hyperbole | when the truth is exaggerated for emphasis |
| idiom | an expression whose meaning is different from what is literally being stated |
| imagery | words or phrases that appeal to the readers' five senses |
| internal rhyme | when the rhyming pattern occurs in the middle of the lines |
| metaphor | a direct comparison of two different things |
| mood | a feeling that the piece of writing gives to the reader |
| ode | lyric poem that addresses a specific topic or theme |
| onomatopoeia | the use of words whose sounds suggest meaning |
| personification | giving human qualities to non-human things |
| poetry | literature where ideas and feelings are expressed in lines and stanzas |
| pun | humorous use of a word or a phrase that suggests a different meaning |
| rhyme | repetition of sounds at the ends of words |
| rhyme scheme | using letters to represent a rhyming pattern in a poem |
| simile | a comparison of two things using like or as |
| speaker | the voice of the poem |
| stanza | group of lines in poetry |
| symbolism | when a person, place, or object stands for something beyond itself |
| tone | the writer's attitude toward his/her subject |
| voice | the speaker of a poem |
