| Simile | A comparison directly expressed by using like or as |
| Oxymoron | A bringing together of two contradictory terms, i.e.: silent scream |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the initial sound of words in succession |
| Dramatic Irony | A convention whereby the character perceives that one thing will happen but the audience knows that another event will occur |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of a word and its "sound" to suggest its meaning, i.e.: buzz |
| Climax | The decisive point in a literary work; the turning point of the work |
| Theme | The message the writer conveys; it is early expressed directly, is unusually implied, and is universal in substance. |
| Paradox | A statement seemingly contradictory or absurd that is actually true. |
| Irony | A contrast between the way things seem to be and the way they actually are; a contrast between the expected outcome and the way things actually turn out. |
| Metaphor | A implied comparison between two objects which have some similarities |
| Flashback | A sudden shift backward in time; the present action is interrupted to insert an episode that took place at an earlier time. |
| Hero/Heroine | A character in the story who shows exceptional physical or moral courage |
| Personification | The endowing of inanimate objects, animals, or ideas with human qualities |
| Imagery | The use of language to produce pictures in the reader's mind |
| Symbol | Something which stands for something else. It employs concert objects to represent such things as ideas, mental states, or abstraction |
| Hyperbole | A gross exaggeration |
| Setting | The time and place of action in a narrative |
| Characterization | The personality a character displays; also the means by which an author reveals that personality |
| Conflict | The struggle found in fiction |
| Mood | The emotional attitude the author takes towards his or her subject |
| Tone | The attitude a writer takes towards a subject or character |
| Structure | The design or form of the completed action |
| Suspense | The anticipation of the outcome of events, and produces an uncertainty that causes anxiety |
| Foreshadowing | The use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature |
| Resolution | The outcome of the conflict in a play or story. |
