Cognitive Distortion
Type s of Cognitive Distortions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Arbitrary Inference | Drawing conclusions without supporting evidence. This includes catastrophizing (thinking that the worst possible case scenario will be the outcome). If I have to move, it will be a major catastrophe! CT: If I have to move, it will be very inconvenient, |
| Selective Abstraction | Forming conclusions based on an isolated negative detail of an event. All else is ignored. You got a flat tire on the way to you vacation, but the rest of the week was great. In thinking and talking about it, you focus mainly on the flat. |
| Overgeneralization | Holding an extreme belief on the basis of one incident and applying the belief to other dissimilar incidents. You make a mistake while speaking at a meeting, and you think you’re not good at talking to people in general. |
| Magnification and Minimization | Perceiving a situation in a greater or lesser light than it truly deserves. Someone was dishonest with you on one, you see them as a liar. |
| Personalization | The tendency of clients to relate external negative events to themselves. The most childlike of all the distortions because it’s a very ego-centric way to think. The prof ignores you in the hall, she doesn’t like, when probably she didn't notice you |
| Labeling and Mislabeling | Imperfections and mistakes define who they are. You're not athletic, so you're not really a true man. You're not a good writer, you're dumb. Change this to: I can get up and speak comfortably and I love to read, but writing is not one of my strengths. |
| Polarized Thinking | All or nothing thinking thinks in black and white terms. If you’re not perfect, you’re a failure. If you didn't get the job, you failed again. Change this to: I learned so much from the interview that I can uses for the next one. |
