| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Describe Heck Tate's testimony. | Testifies that after being contacted by Bob Ewell, he visits the Ewell house to find a beaten Mayella on the floor. He says that he found the right side of her face badly beaten with bruises around her neck. |
| Which side of Mayella's face does Heck Tate claim was bruised? | The right side of her face. |
| Describe Bob Ewell. | A drunken, unemployed member of Maycomb’s poorest family. In his knowingly wrongful accusation that Tom Robinson raped his daughter, Ewell represents the dark side of the South: ignorance, poverty, squalor, and hate-filled racial prejudice. |
| What does Atticus question specifically and repeatedly while Bob Ewell is on the stand? | If the bruise is on Mayella's right eye, the person who hit her would have hit her with their left hand. Tom can't use his left hand. Shows that it is Bob Ewell is left handed so might have beaten Mayella when he saw her trying to kiss a black man. |
| What does Atticus show in his cross-examination of Sheriff Tate? | That Tom Robinson could not have raped or beaten Mayella because his left arm is useless. His left arm was hurt in a farming accident when he was a child. |
| What do we learn indirectly of the home life of the Ewell family in this chapter? | There are many children & father is always drunk. Very poor & are abused by the father. Mayella is often assaulted by him. The family is so poor that they live at the dump and get food from the dump, never wash, and almost never have decent food. |
| Why does Atticus ask Bob Ewell to write out his name? What does the jury see when he does this? | Asks Bob Ewell to write his name to show what hand he writes with. By showing that he writes with his left hand, the jury can see that maybe Bob Ewell hit his daughter, Mayella, and not Tom. |
| What might be the reason for Mayella's crying in the court? | She feels guilty. She wants people to believe her and feel sorry for her. Because she thinks if she is upset they will stop asking her questions and leave her alone. |
| How does Mayella react to Atticus's politeness? Is she used to people being polite? | Becomes very upset by Atticus's polite ways. She does not like being called "Ma'am". She is not used ot people calling her this. She thinks Atticus is making fun of her. Really, Atticus is just trying to be nice. |
| What is Tom's story? | She asked him to come in to look at the door because it was 'broken'. He saw that the hinges were working fine. He wanted to leave when she asked him to come into the house to get something from the top of a large chiffarobe. She kissed him & her dad saw. |
| What is Mayella's story? | She claimed that he had never gone into the house before and that she asked him to come inside to bust up a chiffarobe. That's when Tom so-called raped her. |
| What is Bob Ewell's story? | Claims to have heard Mayella screaming from within the Ewell house, & when he came inside, he saw " ' that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella! ' " Tom ran away after seeing Bob. |
| Why does Scout think that Mayella Ewell was "the loneliest person in the world"? | Because Mayella's father was constantly drinking and her siblings were not friendly to her. Mayella didn't go to school, her mother died, and she had no friends. |
| Why do people in Maycomb resent Atticus? | He plans on actually defending Tom Robinson. |
| Why do Scout, Jem and Dill view the trial from the colored balcony? | There was no where else to sit and they sit with Reverend Sykes |
| How does Atticus react when Bob Ewell insults him and vows revenge? | Ignores the threats. |
| Who does Mayella say she is afraid of and why? | Atticus |
| Why is Tom's left arm crippled? | He has caught his left arm in a cotton gin and has torn the muscles loose from the bones |
| What question does Atticus ask Mayella that makes her furious? | Atticus asks Mayella if her father had attacked her |
| How many witnesses does Atticus say he still has to call when Mayella had finished? | One witness to call. |
| Why is Dill crying? | Because of the way that Gilmer treated Tom |
| What is Link Deas' opinion of Tom? | Says that Tom had worked for him for eight years and he had not had "a speck o'trouble outa him." |
| What does Judge Taylor say to Deas when he speaks in favor of Tom? | Throws him out of the courtroom. |
| Why does Scout take Dill from the courtroom? | Because he began to cry |
| Why was Tom afraid to push Mayella out of the way? | Would not have dared strike a white woman under any circumstances and expect to live long. |
| What does Jem expect the verdict to be? | Thinks that Tom Robinson will be found innocent. Jem is still a child and does not understand discrimination. He does not understand that the jury will say he is guilty because he is black. |
| Does Atticus think the same? | Did his best to defend Tom and Atticus knows that Tom did not rape Mayella. While he knows this is true, he thinks the jury will find him guilty anyway. Atticus knows about discrimination in Maycomb. |
| What is unusual about how long it takes the jury to reach a verdict? Is the verdict predictable or not? | The jury was out talking for slightly longer than usual to make up their minds. The verdict is predictable because the topic of discrimination was clear. Knew that the jury would not think about the facts but rather only see race. |
| Miss Maudie tells Jem that "things are never as bad as they seem". What reasons does she give for this view? | Tells Jem that Atticus did a job no one else could have, and has actually changed many peoples' minds. He hasn't changed enough minds completely to save Tom Robinson, but enough to make people start thinking. |
| As Scout waits for the verdict, she thinks of earlier events. What are these and how do they remind us of the novel's central themes? | Scout witnesses a dog being shot by her father. She remembers the fire in Mrs. Maudies house and the courtroom when Tom Robinson was pronounced guilty. These are all events that Scout could not help stop because she had no power in them |
| What was the verdict? | Guilty |
| How does Atticus react when the verdict is announced? | He is bothered by the verdict |
| After Jem expresses disillusionment over the trial and the verdict, Miss Maudie defends the town and its people. What does she say to Jem. | she says "don't fret, Jem. Things are never as bad as they seem. There are some men in this world that need to do unpleasant things and your father is one of them." |
| What causes Miss Maudie to say that at least they have made a step up in the right direction? | Because the ruling on Tom Robinson was a unfair ruling because they favored whites. |
| What kind of clown does dill decide to be? | One that makes people laugh. |
| How does Atticus react to Bob Ewell's threat against him? | He says he is going to get even with Atticus. Atticus in not worried. Atticus thinks that Mr. Ewell is "all talk" and won't really attack him or harm his family. |
| Briefly show the difference in attitude toward the Cunninghams as expressed by Atticus and Aunt Alexandra. | Atticus believes that they are nice people and Aunt Alexandra believes that they are trash. |
| Why can't Jem accept Scout's opinion about people? | Because he views her as a child that doesn't understand people. |
| What is "circumstantial evidence"? | Is evidence in a trial that you can't see or touch, and is frequently based on what a witness says or sees. |
| What does circumstantial evidence have to do with Tom's conviction? | That he was at the Ewell's house and that he is black. Atticus tries to overcome this by explaining that the bruises could not have been made by him, as he has no use of that one arm. |
| What does Atticus tell Scout about why the jury took so long to convict Tom? | That a Cunningham was on the jury and didn't want to convict Tom. This Cunningham thought that Tom was innocent. The jury actually had to think about the conviction before they did it. |
| Jem forms a new theory about why Boo Radley has never left his house in years. What is this? | Because he doesn't want to deal with the people of Maycomb and how mean and judging they are. |
| If Tom is found guilty on appeal, what will his punishment be? Why? | He will receive the death penalty if he is found guilty on appeal because rape is a capital offense in the state of Alabama and the jury chose not to give Tom a lighter sentence. |
| Atticus says, "it's all adding up and one of these days we're going to pay the bill for it." To what is he referring? | He means that as the injustices mount, the African-Americans will demand a change and sooner or later the South will have to pay the bill for all the injustices it committed against them. It's a matter of what goes around, comes around. |
