Essay Terms

| Hook (Grabber) | An opening sentence or phrase designed to grab the reader's attention |
| Thesis Statement | The sentence that clearly states the controlling idea of an essay—the writer's topic, position, and reasoning |
| Introductory Paragraph | The paragraph that declares the topic and forecasts the content of the essay |
| Body Paragraphs | Paragraphs that provide for the controlling idea |
| Transition Words/Phrases | Words and phrases that connect the ideas of one sentence or paragraph to another |
| Release (Zinger) | A closing sentence or phrase designed to leave the reader with something to think about |
| Concluding Paragraph | The paragraph that contains the summary the main points of the essay and their support of the controlling idea |
| *Bridge | One or more sentences that connect the "hook," the opening, to the thesis statement by providing background or a brief explanation of the issue being discussed |
| *Recast | The sentence in the concluding paragraph that restates/rephrases the thesis statement or controlling idea |
| *Recap | A brief summary of the points of the essay's main points |
| *Kernel Essay | A listing of short sentences that declare what will be |
| *Text Structure | Organizational structure; the logic connecting ideas presented in the essay (Ex. Descriptive, Chronological/List, Cause-Effect, etc.) |
| Revision | The process of improving writing by adding, removing, moving, and substituting words and phrases |
| Editing | The process of correcting writing by inspecting capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling |
