| analyze | To examine something thoroughly. |
| audience | Who is watching, reading, listening, etc. to the production. |
| capitalize | Proper nouns, nationalities, brand names, special events, etc. |
| central idea | The main idea that ties everything together. |
| character | A person in a book, movie, etc. |
| cite | To give credit to a different source. |
| comma | A punctuation mark used for separating items in a list and used for indicating a pause in a sentence. |
| conclusion | A general summing up of the specific details in a text. |
| connotation/ denotation | Connotation: the feelings and associations that a word suggests. Denotation: the literal, dictionary definition of a word. |
| conventions | The rules of grammar. |
| coordinate adjectives | Place in between adjectives and try to reverse them in order to see if you need commas. |
| elaborate | To explain in more detail on a topic. |
| elicit | To draw forth; evoke; out; to try and gather. |
| evidence | Facts used to explain why something is true. |
| formal style | Changing the tone. A note to a friend- informal. Essay- formal |
| inference | An educated guess; must have evidence to support your reasoning. |
| main idea | The overall topic of something. |
| parts of speech | A category for a word such as noun or verb. |
| plot | The storyline of a body of text. |
| prefix | A segment of a word that can be put before the root word to change the meaning. |
| pre-write | To plan out what you are going to write. |
| punctuate | To add periods, commas, capital letters, etc. to a sentence to make the meaning clear. |
| purpose | Texts are written for different purposes: to inform, to persuade, to express feelings, or to entertain. |
| reference | An indication, as in a book, of some other source of information such as a source. |
| reflect | To bring as a result; to think seriously on; to cast blame or discredit upon; similar to analyze. |
| relevant | Whether or not something has to do with a topic. |
| revise | To alter something that already was written. |
| rhyme | Two words that have the same ending sound. |
| role | A character in a play for example. |
| root | The basic element of a word or form, without affixes or phonetic changes. |
| stanza | In a poem a group of consecutive lines that forms a sing unit. |
| style | Like formal meaning. |
| suffix | A segment of a word that is used after the root word to change the meaning. |
| summary | A shortened version of the main idea/ plot of a book for example. |
| supporting details | Details that add on to a topic and help make it clear. |
| technical meaning | See denotation/ connotation. It is just like denotation. |
| theme | The life lesson or moral of the story. |
| tone | The attitude that a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character. |
