Eng. II Study Terms

TermDefinition
Allusion Refers to a statement, historical event, literature, religion, and/or mythology.
Paradox Statement or situation that seems to be contradiction but reveals a truth. EX: Jumbo shrimp, wide fool, bittersweet.
Imagery Language that appeals to the senses. (Sight, touch, taste, smell, and hear).
Personification Human qualities are given to an object/something non-human.
Symbol A thing that represents or stands for something else.
Allegory A story or poem with a hidden meaning.
Ambiguity An unclear, indefinite, or equivocal word, expression, meaning.
Satire Type of writing that ridicules something (a person, a group, humanity, ect.) in order to reveal a weakness.
Simile A comparison using "like" of "as".
Metaphor A comparison NOT using "like" or "as".
Hyperbole An exaggeration. EX: Your backpack ways a ton!
Pun A play of multiple meanings of a word or two words that sound alike but have different meanings.
Idiom Words or phrase thats is not to be taken literally. EX: "If you play your cards right." "Driving me up a wall."
Foreshadow A clue that hits that something will happen later in the plot.
Flashback Interrupts the present to look back on the past.
Summary Giving a general recap of what was said/written.
Paraphrase Using your own words to repeat what was said/written. *(Less detailed,it will be more detailed the a summary.)*
Web Sources .edu and .gov are more reliable types of website for research.
Oxymoron EX: Seriously joking, jumbo shrimp, silent scream.
Tone The attitude or approach that the author takes toward the subject.
Mood The author uses words to make the reader feel a certain way.
Alliteration The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of each word.
Onomatopoeia Sound effects.
Repetition It repeats the same word or phrase a few times.
Theme The main idea.
Parody Parody is an imitation of a particular writer, artist or a genre, exaggerating it to produce a comic effect
Parable A short story but with a moral lesson.
Thesis A short sentence that summarizes the main argument/idea.
Fact Something that can be proven.
Opinion A person's or a group's feeling towards something.
Cause & Effect If you do 'this' then the outcome will be 'this'.
