| Fables | short tale to teach a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as the characters |
| Capsized | to turn bottom up, overturn |
| Gulp | to swallow eagerly |
| Quiver | to shake with a slight but rapid motion |
| Diet | food or drink you normally have |
| Neighbor | one who lives close to you |
| Spoil | to become unfit to use, eat, or drink |
| Impolite | not showing good manners |
| Loan | to give someone something and expect that it will be returned |
| Sash | piece of cloth worn over the shoulder or around the waist |
| Shattered | broken into many pieces |
| Jealous | feeling unhappy because someone has something that you do not |
| Ball | a big, fancy party with dancing |
| Midnight | 12:00 in the morning when it is dark |
| Widow | person whose wife or husband has died |
| Cottage | a small house, usually only one story |
| Disposition | the way someone looks at life; a cheerful disposition means you look at things in a happy, cheerful way |
| Harp | a musical instrument consisting of a triangular frame formed by a curved neck and having strings that are plucked with the fingers |
