Reading Vocab Set2

TermDefinition
fact a statement that is true and can be proven
fiction a reading genre; authors use their imagination to create a story
first person point of view in which the narrator tells the story; uses personal pronouns (I, we, us)
foreshadowing hints about how the plot is going to develop or the story is going to end
genre a category of literature; examples include historical fiction, fantasy, biography, autobiography, etc.
graphics things like maps, charts, and pictures that help you to understand a text
hyperbole an exaggeration used for effect; example: I ate a truckload of pizza for dinner!
illustration a drawing or picture that goes along with a text
imagery words found in writing or poetry that help the reader to see or visualize something; imagery usually appeals to the 5 senses
inference an educated guess based on prior knowledge or clues in the text
main idea what a story or text is mostly about
metaphor a direct comparison; does NOT use like or as; example: He is a fish when he swims.
mood the feeling that the reader gets from a story or poem
non-fiction a reading genre; true stories or informational text
paraphrase to restate or summarize something in your own words
