Poetry Terms

Meter Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry.
Poetry Paint pictures with words.
Rhythm The pattern of beats in the lines of a poem.
Free Verse Poems that don't rhyme and no regular rhythms.
Personification Giving human characteristics or traits to non-living things.
Alliteration Repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds in words; close together.
Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration.
Onomatopia Words that imitate the sound it descries.
Simile Use like or as to compare.
Metaphor Comparison without using like or as.
Stanza A paragraph in a poem.
Endrhyme Words at the end of a sentence that rhymes.
Allusion Referring to something else.
