poetry terms

poetry paint pictures with words. Written lines and stanzas.
meter pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. The rhythm or repeating pattern.
rhythm the pattern of beats in the lines of a poem.
free verse poems that do not rhyme and do not have a regular rhythm.
personification giving human characteristics or traits to non-living things
alliteration repetition of the same or very similar constant sounds in words that are close together in a poem.
hyperbole extreme exaggeration
onomatopoeia the use of words that intimate sounds
metaphor comparison using like or as
rhyme words that have the same sound
allusion referring to something else.
end rhyme words at the end of the sentence rhyme.
