TermDefinition
Poetry Paint pictures with words. Written in lines and stanzas.
Meter Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. The rhythm or repeating patterns.
Rhythm The pattern or beats in the lines of a poem.
Free Verse Poems that don't rhyme and don't have a regular rhythm.
Personification Giving human characteristics or traits to non-living things.
Alliteration Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of a word.
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration.
Onomatopoeia Words that imitate the sound it describes.
Prose Ordinary writing.
Simile Use like or as to compare.
Metaphor Comparison without like or as.
Stanza A paragraph in a poem.
End Rhyme Words at the end of a sentence that rhyme.
Allusion Referring to something else.
Rhyme Scheme The pattern of rhyming in a poem.
Couplet Two lines that rhyme.
Haiku A single subject poem in 3 lines without rhyming.
Dialogue Lines spoken by actors.
Drama A play
Acts Major sections of a drama/play
