| Poetry | Paint pictures with words. Written in lines and stanzas. |
| Meter | Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. The rhythm or repeating patterns. |
| Rhythm | The pattern or beats in the lines of a poem. |
| Free Verse | Poems that don't rhyme and don't have a regular rhythm. |
| Personification | Giving human characteristics or traits to non-living things. |
| Alliteration | Repetition of the same sound at the beginning of a word. |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words that imitate the sound it describes. |
| Prose | Ordinary writing. |
| Simile | Use like or as to compare. |
| Metaphor | Comparison without like or as. |
| Stanza | A paragraph in a poem. |
| End Rhyme | Words at the end of a sentence that rhyme. |
| Allusion | Referring to something else. |
| Rhyme Scheme | The pattern of rhyming in a poem. |
| Couplet | Two lines that rhyme. |
| Haiku | A single subject poem in 3 lines without rhyming. |
| Dialogue | Lines spoken by actors. |
| Drama | A play |
| Acts | Major sections of a drama/play |
