Physical Properties

Unit 6 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Property Characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured
Solubility Ability of 1 substance to be dissolved in another one
Dissolve When 2 substance mix to form a solution
Relative Density Density of an object compared to the density of water- determines whether it sinks or floats
Conductor Material that conducts or allows energy to pass through easily (sound, heat, electricity)
Insulator Material that does not allow energy to pass through easily (sound, heat, electricity)
Physical State Form of a substance; solid, liquid, or gas
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Thermal Energy Heat Energy
Electrical Energy Energy from electrons moving through a circuit
Evaporate Physical Change of a liquid to a gas
Magnetism Force of repulsion (pushing) or attraction (pulling) between poles of magnets
Mixture Combination of 2 or more different kinds of matter which keep their own physical properties (easily separated)
Ingredient A single part of a mixture or a solution
Solution Type of mixture in which particles of the 2 substances are evenly mixed (not easily separated)
Freezing Point Temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid (water=0 degrees Celsius)
Melting Point Temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid (water=0 degrees Celsius)
Boiling Point Temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas (water=100 degrees Celsius)
Celsius Temperature scale that sets the freezing point of water at 0 degrees and the boiling point at 100 degrees
Condense Physical change in matter from a gas to a liquid
Triple Beam Balance Tool used to measure mass that features three beams with sliding masses
Measurement Process of using tools to observe an object's physical properties (mass, volume, temperature, length)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
