Brainstem
Neuro
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Basilar section of brainstem | anterior; contains predominantly motor system structures; motor nuclei: substantia nigra, pontine nuclei, & inf olive; pontocerebellar axons; descending axons from cerebral cortex |
| spinothalamic tract | pain & temperature discrimination; pass directly through brainstem w/o synapsing |
| spinocerebellar tracts | unconscious proprioception; leave brainstem via the inf cerebellar peduncle to enter cerebellum |
| sympathetic tracts | don't synapse at all in brainstem |
| tegmentum | posterior bs; reticular formation, sensory nuc & ascending sensory pathways, CN nuc, & MLF; |
| reticular formation | adjusts the gen level of act t/o the nervous system; a complex neural network including the reticular nuclei, their connections, & pathways; integrates sensory & cortical info, regs somatic motor act, autonomics, & consciousness; mods pain info |
| tectum | only in midbrain; involved in intrinsic & extrinsic head movements & eye muscs; pretectal area & sup & inf colliculi; post to tegmentum; most post part of brainstem |
| superior cerebellar peduncle | carries efferent info from cerebellum to the midbrain |
| oculomotor parsympathetic nucleus | Edinger-Westphal nucleus (supplies ps control of the pupillary sphincter & ciliary musc) |
