Key Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Consciousness | Awareness of things inside and outside ourselves |
| Selective Attention | Focusing on a particular stimulus |
| Preconscious | Descriptive if information that is not conscious but is retrievable into conscious awareness |
| Unconscious | Unavailable to awareness under most circumstances (sometimes called subconscious) |
| Nonconcious | Descriptive of bodily process, such as the growing of hair, which we are not aware of |
| Altered State of Consciousness | A person's sense of self or sense of the world changes |
| Circadian Rhythms | Biological clocks |
| Rapid-eye-movement sleep | or REM sleep, beneath our closed lids, our eyes are moving rapidly |
| Insomina | The inability to sleep |
| Night Terrors | also called sleep terrors, are similar to, but more severe than nightmares |
| Sleeping Apnea | Breathing interruption that occurs during sleep |
| Narcolepsy | a rare sleep problem in which people suddenly fall asleep no matter what time or where they are |
| Meditation | A method some people use to try to narrow their consciousness so that the stresses of the outside world fade away |
| Biofeedback | A system that provides or "feeds back"information about something happening in the body |
| Hypnosis | an altered state of consciousness during which people respond to suggestions and behave as through they were in a trance |
| Posthypnotic Suggestion | The therapist gives instructions during hypnosis that are to be carried out after the hypnosis session has ended |
| Addiction | After a person takes a drug for awhile the body craves it to feel normal |
| Depressants | Drugs that slow the activity of the nervous system |
| Intoxication | another word for drunkness |
| Narcotics | Addictive depressants that have been used to relieve pain and induce sleep |
| Stimulants | Increase the activity of the nervous system |
| Amphetamines | Know for helping people stay awake and for reducing appetite |
| Hallucination | A perception of an object or a sound that seems real but is not |
| Delusion | A false idea that seems real |
| Hallucinogen | A drug that produces hallucinations |
| Detoxification | The removal of the harmful substance from the body |
