Figurative Language Vocabulary Practice

| adage/proverb | an anonymous saying regarding advice or wisdom, example: "A penny saved is a penny earned" |
| idiom | An expression that cannot be understood if taken literally (example: "Get your head out of the clouds"). |
| metaphor | a figure of speech comparing two unlike things WITHOUT using "like" or "as" |
| simile | a figure of speech comparing two unlike things USING "like" or "as |
| figurative language | language employing one or more figures of speech (simile, metaphor, imagery, etc.) |
| alliteration | repetition of beginning sounds |
| personification | inanimate objects are given human qualities or are represented as possessing human form |
| imagery | the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas |
| onomatopoeia | words that represent sounds (meow, bark, buzz, achoo, humph) |
| rhyme | one of two or more words or phrases that end in the same sounds |
| meter | rhythm that continuously repeats a single basic pattern |
| stanza | a group of lines in a poem |
| sonnet | a poem made up of 14 lines that rhyme in a fixed pattern |
| couplet | two lines of poetry that form a unit |
| hyperbole | language that describes something as better or worse than it really is (an exaggeration) |
| haiku | an unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually 5, 7, and 5 syllables |
