LCM Vocabulary

Atom The basic unit of a chemical element.
Chemical Bond A restraint used to hold atoms together.
Chemical Change A result of a formation of a new substance.
Chemical Formula A formula used to detect ratio of elements.
Chemical Property An essential attribute shared by atomic particles.
Element A substance composed of atoms having identical number of protons in the nucleus.
Law of Conservation of Mass The principal that matter can neither be created nor destroyed.
Matter Something that takes up space and has mass.
Molecule The smallest particle of a substance.
Oxidation Number The degree of oxidation of an atom, ion, or molecule.
Physical Change The withdrawal of heat to change something from a solid to a liquid to a gas.
Stable Not subject to extreme change or fluctuation.
Valence Electrons An electron in an outer shell of an atom that forms chemical bonds.
Compound When two elements combine.
Pure Substances Material produced by or used in a reaction involving changes in atoms or molecules.
Endothermic Change When a reaction proceeds, it absorbs energy.
Exothermic Change When a reaction proceeds, it releases energy.
Product A substance produced during a natural, chemical, or manufacturing process.
Reactant A substance that takes part in and undergoes change in a reaction.
Synthesis Combination or composition.
