Isoprpyl Alcohol (70%) | Most commonly used to prepare skin before minor procedures such as drawing blood or giving injections -shown to lower bacteria count for 20-40 minutes after application effective against: bact, fung, virus. A/E: excessive dryness of skin |
Providone-iodine (Betadine) | Antiseptic that kills bac, fungi, virus. usedfor prevent. of Tx. of topical infect assoc. w. Sx, burns, & minor cuts, scrapes & relief ofminor vag infections...make sure pt isn't allergic to seafood. A/E: staining of skin, irritation, pain |
Chlorohexidine (hibiclens) | Used for cleaning central line. Effective against bact & fungi. Used primarily as a surgical scrub or handwashing agent -A/E:CNS toxicity in neonates & burn pt(s) |
benzalkonium chloride (zephiran) | A surface active drug that works by denaturing the microorganisms by destroying its proteins |
