Sleep Disorder drug types Benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines
End in "-pam", Temazepam, Lorazepam, Diazepam, etc Benzodiazepine type. SE:Drowsiness, dizziness, confusion D:Give 30min before bedtime CONTRA: renal/hepatic impairment, suicidal ideation, neuro disorders, sleep apnea. Smoking deceases effects of the drug
Zopidem (Ambien), other drugs are Zaleplon (Sonata), Eszopiclone (Lunesta) Non-benzodiazepine SE: Drowsiness, headache, anxiety, dizziness, amnesia D: Administer before sleep, on an empty stomach for full effect PT: try to prevent falls CONTRA: Children younger than 18, suicidal ideation
Muscle Spasms drug types Centrally acting muscle relaxants and peripherally acting muscle relaxants
Baclofen (Lioresal) Centrally acting MR SE: Drowsiness and dizziness, nausea, constipation D:Encourage fluids, increase fiber,with milk or food PT: Don't drive, change position slowly if dizzy CONTRA: Cerebral palsy. Pt with diabetes may require increased insulin
Dantrolene (Dantrium) Peripherally acting MR SE: muscle weakness, drowsiness, diarrhea, liver toxicity D: Oral or IV PT:Reports muscle weakness, prolonged diarrhea, avoid driving CONTRA: Liver disease
Parkinson's Disease drug types Dopamine-replacement drugs, Direct-acting dopamine receptor agonists, Indirect-acting dopamine receptor agonists/MAOIs
Levodopa/Carbidopa (Sinemet) Dopamine-replacement drug SE: Nausea, vomiting, ortho hypo, twitching D:Can take up to 6months for response PT:Uring, sweat may darken, move slowly to sitting/standing p, CONTRA:Glaucoma, melanoma, suicidal thoughts
