Poetry Terms

| Poetry | form of writing in verse that uses lines and stanzas |
| Line | a group of words in the same line; a verse |
| Stanza | a group of lines; a poetic paragraph |
| Rhyme | two or more words that have the same ending sound |
| Rhythm | the beat or flow of a poem; meter |
| Simile | comparing two things using the words "like" or "as" |
| Metaphor | comparing two things without using the words "like" or "as" |
| Personification | giving human characteristics to something that is not human |
| Imagery | use of words to show sounds, tastes, smells, sights, and texture |
| Hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| Symbolism | when something stands for something else |
| Onomatopoeia | a sound word |
| Idiom | a phrase that has a special meaning beyond its literal one |
| Alliteration | the repetition of a beginning sound i.e. a tongue twister |
