Poetry Terms

Poetry form of writing in verse that uses lines and stanzas
Line a group of words in the same line; a verse
Stanza a group of lines; a poetic paragraph
Rhyme two or more words that have the same ending sound
Rhythm the beat or flow of a poem; meter
Simile comparing two things using the words "like" or "as"
Metaphor comparing two things without using the words "like" or "as"
Personification giving human characteristics to something that is not human
Imagery use of words to show sounds, tastes, smells, sights, and texture
Hyperbole an extreme exaggeration
Symbolism when something stands for something else
Onomatopoeia a sound word
Idiom a phrase that has a special meaning beyond its literal one
Alliteration the repetition of a beginning sound i.e. a tongue twister
