Stanza A group of lines in a poem
Line A row of words in a poem
Personification Giving human qualities to a non-human animal, object or idea.
Topic The main subject of the poem
Theme The overall message or life lesson of a poem
Onomatopoeia A word that imitates the sound it represents.
Alliteration Repetition of beginning sounds of words.
Imagery Descriptive words that create a picture in the reader’s mind.
Repetition When a word or phrase is used more than once for emphasis
Rhyme Scheme The pattern of rhyme in a poem.
Rhythm The beat of a poem.
Hyperbole An exaggeration for effect
Extended Metaphor A metaphor that carries the comparison through several lines or throughout an entire poem
Simile A comparison between two unlike things using like or as
Metaphor A comparison between two unlike things NOT using like or as; stating that something IS something else
