| author's purpose | why an author writes something; persuade, inform, or entertain |
| characters | the people, animals, or other things that are part of a story |
| compare | identify how things are the SAME |
| draw a conclusion | form an opinion or make a smart guess about something after reading |
| conflict | a struggle or problem that a character or characters must overcome in a story |
| context clues | information in a reading selection that helps you identify the meaning of a word or a group of words |
| contrast | identify how things are DIFFERENT |
| detail | a piece of information that relates to and supports the main idea |
| dialogue | spoken words between characters in a story |
