Parts of Speech

TermDefinition
Abstract Noun A noun that is not touchable - an idea (EX: hope)
Action Verb Verb that shows action or tells what action is taking place. Can be visible or mental action (running, thinking)
Adjectives Words that describe a noun or pronoun (the HAPPY boy)
Adverb Modified (describes) a verb or another adverb. Answers questions how, when, where, why?
Collective Noun Names a group of people or things (class, team, club)
Common Noun Does not name a SPECIFIC person, place, or thing (school, city, country)
Compound Noun a noun made up of 2 or more words (high school, baseball, dog house)
Concrete Noun a person, place, or thing taht can be seen, heard, touched, smelled, or tasted
Conjunction Joins words or ideas (FANBOYS = for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
FANBOYS means what for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Helping Verb comes before the main verb and hels express meaning, tense (am, is, are, do, does, can, could) EX: She IS talking
Infinitive to + a verb (to run, to dance - he loves TO SING)
Linking Verb Verbs that join the subject with a word(s) in the predicate that describe or rename the subject (be, is, am, are, was, were, seem, appear, become, feel, sound, smell)
Main Verb Final Verb in a verb phrase, tells what action is happening EX: Harry is THINKING about Jane.
Noun A person, place, thing, or idea (EX: girl, school, book, hope)
Prepositional Phrase A group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun (in, on, of, under EX: on the desk, under the table)
Pronoun A word that replaces a noun (he, they, I, we, my, she, it, them)
Proper Noun Names a specific person, place, or thing (EX: John, Comstock, Samsung)
Verb Words that express or show action or link the subject with a word inthe predicate (EX: is, think, run, be, were, jump)
Verb Phrase A group of words that contains a main verb and one or more helping verb EX: He IS RUNNING.
