Literary Terms (Advanced)
| Term | Definition |

| Analogy | A comparison between 2 like things in order to explain (EX: learning to swim is like learning to walk; once you learn, you won't forget) |
| Bias | Obviously favoring or being against something. |
| Connotation | An impression that comes with a particular word.Connotations relate not to the word's actual meaning, but to the ideas or qualities that are implied by the word |
| Denotation | the dictionary definition of a word |
| Dialect | A form of language fpoken in a particular area (EX: Texans say howdy) |
| Drama | A story designed to be performed on stage in front of an audience |
| Foreshadowing | Suggesting, hinting, indicating, or showing what will occur later in a story |
| Folktales | Anonymous, timeless, placeless tale handed down orally |
| Inference | To make an educated guess about something based on the information you have |
| Dramatic Irony | When the reader or audience understand more about the events of a story than a character |
| Situational Irony | When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected or appropriate |
| Verbal irony | When a character says one thing but really means another |
| Local Color | use of details specific to a region or area (speech, action, customs, descriptions of people, place, things) |
| Mood | mood or atmosphere is the feeling you get when reading |
| Myth | A traditional tale of deep cultural importance. it often (but not always) deals with gods, supernatural beings, or ancestral heros |
| Narrative | a story |
| Motive | The REASON a character thinks, feels, or acts in a certain way |
| Nonfiction | Writing that is TRUE |
| Novella | A story (fiction) that is in between a short story and a novel in length. |
| Prose | Ordinary speaking and writing (NOT POETRY) |
| Short Story | A piece of prose fiction usually under 10,000 words |
| Stereotyping | an oversimplified representation of a type, gender, class, religious group, or occupation (EX: old people are boring) |
| Subplot | A secondary story line in a novel or drama. Most subplots have some connection with the main plot; a plot under the main plot |
| Theme | The main message in a book, story, movie, or poem |
| Unreliable narrator | A narrator who describes events in the story, but seems to make obvious mistakes that a careful reader would catch. |
