Literary Terms (Kinds of Poetry)

TermDefinition
Ballad A narrative folk song usually created by people and passed orally. May inlcude killings, fights,historical events
Concrete poem a peom which has it's lines arranged in a shape that has to do with the poem's meaning
Epic Poem A long narrative (story) peom that has actions, travels, heros, adventures, gods, battles. The setting may include several nations, continents, universes
Haiku Japanese peom that has 3 lines. First line has 5 syllables, 2nd has 7, 3rd has 5. Often about nature
Lyric Poetry short poem, musical, no plot, expresses feelings
Narrative Poem A story in the form of a poem
Ode A long, detailed peom in stanzas. Lines are different lengths. Often deals with serious subjects or are dedicated to a specific subject.
Sonnet A poem of 14 lines, arranged in a set rhyme scheme abba,abba, cdecde. Often about love
