Literary Terms (Poetry)

| alliteration | words next to each other that have the same beginning sound (dumb dog = example) |
| couplet | two lines- the second line immediately following the first that ends in a rhyme to form a complet thought. |
| Figurative Language | language that you have to figure out! It's the opposite of literal. |
| How do you figure out the rhyme scheme of a poem? | give letters to all the same sounds of the last letter of each line Example: AABBC |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration used for effect (ex. she is older than dirt) |
| idiom | a group of words that have a special meaning when used together (EX: it's raining cats and dogs) |
| imagery | "mental pictures" that readers experience when reading. Includes sound, touch, taste, heat, cold, smell, movement, etc. |
| literal language | You mean exactly what you say. A word's basic meaning |
| metaphor | comparison between two unlike things not using like, as, or than (EX: My hair is dirt brown) |
| onomatopoeia | words for sounds (EX: buzz, pop, sizzle, ding, meow) |
| personification | giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects or animals (EX: The trees danced in the wind) |
| poetry | rhythmical writing arranged in lines and stanzas |
| repetition | when a word, sound, image, or idea is repeated in order to make a point |
| simile | a comparison between two UNLIKE thinkgs using like, as, or than |
| stanza | a fixed number of lines in a poem, like a paragraph in a poem |
