Echo | A reflected sound wave |
Elasticity | The ability of a material to bounce back after being disturbed |
Density | How much matter, or mass, there is in a given amount of space, or volume |
Loudness | Your perception of the energy of a sound |
Intensity | The amount of energy a sound wave carries per second through a unit area |
Decibel (db) | The loudness of different sounds is compared using this unit |
Pitch | How high or low the sound seems to a person |
Ultrasound | Sound waves with frequencies above the normal human range of hearing |
Infrasound | Sounds with frequencies below the normal human range of hearing |
Larnyx | Two folds of tissue that make up the human voice box |
Doppler Effect | The change in frquency of a wave as its source moves in relation to an observer |
Causes of the Doppler Effect | When a source moves, the frequency of the waves changes because the motion of the source adds to the motion of the waves |
Causes of a Sonic Boom | A shock wave releases a huge amount of energy causing a loud noise |
Fundamental Tone | The lowest natural frequency of an object |
Overtone | An object's higher natural frequencies |
Acoustics | The study of how sounds interact with each other and the environment |
Reverbration | The echoes of a sound that are heard after a sound source stops producing sound waves |
Ear Canal | A narrow region leading from the outside of the human ear to the eardrum |
Ear Drum | A small, tightly stretched, drumlike membrane in the ear |
Cochlea | A fluid-filled cavity shaped like a snail shell |
Echolocation | The use of reflected sound waves to determine the distances or to locate objects |
Sonar | A system that uses reflected sound waves to detect and locate objects underwater |
