| element | atoms or molecules made up of a single type of an atom |
| compound | molecule made up of 2 or more different types of atoms |
| pure substance | a substance made up of one type of matter (can be an element or compound) has a constant composition has to be chemically seperated |
| mixture | a substance made up of multiple types of matter has a variable composition can be sorted and can be separated physically |
| heterogeneous | mixture where the particles are not evenly disturbuted |
| homogenous | mixture where the particles are evenly disturbuted |
| solution | the state of being dissolved |
| colloid | A suspension of finely divided particles in a continuous medium from which the particles do not settle out rapidly and are not readily filtered. |
