|---|---|
| Atom | the basic unit of a chemical element. |
| Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
| Matter | physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; (in physics) that which occupies space and possesses rest mass, especially as distinct from energy |
| Compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture |
| Element | a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic. |
| Pure Substance | A substance made of one type of matter (can be element or compound) and has constant composition. A pure substance cannot be physically separated but has to be chemically sperated |
| Mixture | Substance made up of multiple types of matter and has a variable composition. A mixture can be physically separated. |
| Homogeneous | A mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed |
| Heterogeneous | A mixture where the particles are evenly distributed |
| Solution | A mixture in which particles of one or more substances (the solute) are distributed throughout another substance |
| Colloid | the mixture must be one that does not settle or would take a very long time to settle appreciably |
| Suspension | A mixture in which small particles of a substance are dispersed throughout a gas or liquid |
| Tyndall Effect | The Tyndall Effect is the effect of light scattering in many directions in colloidal dispersion |
