Term | Definition |
---|---|
Matter | Anything that has mass and volume |
Atom | Consists of a nucleus, which has a positive charge, and a set of electrons that move around the nucleus. |
Molecule | Are made up of atoms that are held together by chemical bonds. |
Element | determined by the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms. The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom of an element is known as the atomic number. |
Compound | A substance made of two or more different elements that are chemically combined |
Pure Substances | A substance that is made up of one type of matter. Has to be chemically separated. |
Mixed Substances | A substance that is made up of multiple types of matter. Can be physically separated. |
Homogeneous | A mixture where the particles are evenly distributed. |
Heterogeneous | A mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed. |
Suspension | A mixture containing particles that settle if not disturbed. |
Colloid | Are mixtures containing mid sized particles that do not settle. |
Solution | Containing atom, ions, and molecules fully dissolved. |
Tyndall Effect | Dispersed colloids particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions. |
