Terms and definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Molecule | A group of atoms bonded together, that represents the smallest unit of a chemical compound and can take part in a chemical reaction. |
| Atom | a extremely small amount of a thing |
| Matter | Occupies space and possess rest mass |
| compound | two or more different atoms bonded together |
| elements | one or more atoms of the same kind (bonded together) |
| mixture | a substance made up of multiple types of matter, can be separated physically |
| pure substance | a substance made up of one type of matter, cannot be physically separated |
| heterogeneous | a mixture where the particles are NOT even distributed |
| homogeneous | a mixture where the particles are evenly distributed |
| colloids | a mixture containing mid-size particles that do not settle out |
| suspensions | a mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed |
| solutions | a mixture containing atoms, ions, or molecules fully dissolved |
| Tyndall effect | dispersed colloid particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions |
