Terms and definitions

Molecule A group of atoms bonded together, that represents the smallest unit of a chemical compound and can take part in a chemical reaction.
Atom a extremely small amount of a thing
Matter Occupies space and possess rest mass
compound two or more different atoms bonded together
elements one or more atoms of the same kind (bonded together)
mixture a substance made up of multiple types of matter, can be separated physically
pure substance a substance made up of one type of matter, cannot be physically separated
heterogeneous a mixture where the particles are NOT even distributed
homogeneous a mixture where the particles are evenly distributed
colloids a mixture containing mid-size particles that do not settle out
suspensions a mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed
solutions a mixture containing atoms, ions, or molecules fully dissolved
Tyndall effect dispersed colloid particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions
