Holland Terms and Vocab 2
| Term | Definition |

| Stanza | like a paragraph but in a poem |
| Rhythm | the beats of a poem, series of stressed and unstressed syllables |
| Repetition | to repeat something over and over |
| Free verse | poem that has no formal structure, no rhythm, and no rhyme |
| Rhyme scheme/rhyme pattern | shows the pattern of rhyming lines in a poem. Examples: AABB, ABAB, ABCA |
| Point of view | the way the author allows you to "see" and "hear" what's going on |
| First person point of view | story uses words "me" or "I" |
| Third person point of view | uses "he", "she", or "they"; only lets you know what one character thinks |
| Omniscient point of view | like God; "lets you know what everyone thinks - uses "he", "she", or "they" |
| Figurative language | poets and writers use to make their writing better like similes and metaphors |
| Similes | comparison of things that have something in common using "like" or "as" |
| Metaphors | comparison between two unlike things without using "like" or "as" |
