Definitions of matter, atom, and molecule
Term | Definition |

matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
atom | a particle that makes up molecules |
moleculeb | a combination of two or more atoms |
element | 1 or 2 of the same type of atoms bonded together |
compound | 2 or more different types of atoms bonded together |
pure substance | a substance that is made up of one type of matter and must be separated chemically |
mixture | a substance that is made up of multiple types of matter and must be separated physically |
homogeneous | a mixture where the particles are evenly distibuted |
heterogeneous | a mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed |
solution | a mixture containing atoms, ions, or molecules fully dissolved (coffee) |
colloid | a mixture containing mid size particles that do not settle out (hard to see with eye) example: milk |
suspension | a mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed (large particle size) |
Tyndall Effect | dispersed colloid particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions. |
