pure substance a substance that is made up of one type of matter and must be separated chemically
mixture a substance that is made up of multiple types of matter and must be separated physically
homogeneous a mixture where the particles are evenly distibuted
heterogeneous a mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed
solution a mixture containing atoms, ions, or molecules fully dissolved (coffee)
colloid a mixture containing mid size particles that do not settle out (hard to see with eye) example: milk
suspension a mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed (large particle size)
Tyndall Effect dispersed colloid particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions.
