Definitions of matter, atom, and molecule

| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| atom | a particle that makes up molecules |
| moleculeb | a combination of two or more atoms |
| element | 1 or 2 of the same type of atoms bonded together |
| compound | 2 or more different types of atoms bonded together |
| pure substance | a substance that is made up of one type of matter and must be separated chemically |
| mixture | a substance that is made up of multiple types of matter and must be separated physically |
| homogeneous | a mixture where the particles are evenly distibuted |
| heterogeneous | a mixture where the particles are not evenly distributed |
| solution | a mixture containing atoms, ions, or molecules fully dissolved (coffee) |
| colloid | a mixture containing mid size particles that do not settle out (hard to see with eye) example: milk |
| suspension | a mixture containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed (large particle size) |
| Tyndall Effect | dispersed colloid particles scatter light, allowing us to differentiate between colloids and solutions. |
