Behavioral Considerations in Phys Therapy

graded exposure gradual, systematic progression of exercise from an initial intolerable level; for pts w/ chronic pain; ex. walking program
goal setting patient-centered; set challenging, measurable, & realistic; discuss strategies for goal achievment- ex log;
Problem solving identify barriers to goal attainment & solns for goal attainment
attention diversion an attempt to distract pts from their current condition; focus more on what they can do than what they can't do
somatoform disorders mental issue facilitating a physical manifestation; usually neuro sxs; exs. conversion syndrome & hypochondriasis (catastrophizing)
Axis 1 (clinical) disorders schizophrenia, bipolar, somatoform disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, Dissociative identity disorder, disorders related to substance abuse
Axis II (personality) disorders borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
antisocial personality disorder no regard for the well-being of others; lacks remorse; reckless disregard for safety of others; deceitful; impuslive
obsessive-compulsive personality disorder unable to make decisions to help self; allows others to assume responsibility for some or all parts of life; looking for caring relationship; unrealistically afraid of being left alone
